Boat Storage 101

Some people can easily find adventure on land. They spend their free afternoons dirt biking, hiking, and doing whatever they can to have fun outdoors. Other people love being outside, but they look to the water for a little fun in the sun. Lakes, rivers, and oceans are extremely underrated in terms of places to have a good time. You can spend your afternoon tubing down a lazy river or whitewater rafting on an intense one.

If you love water sports, it's safe to assume that you're going to have a boat at some point in your life. A lot of people would buy their literal dream boat in a heartbeat; they just don't know where they would put it. Everyone knows where they would keep their car, but a boat is a different matter. How do you maintain a boat that would spend months inactive in storage? What's the best way to store a boat? Don't fret; there are simple answers to your boat storage questions.

Make repairs before long-term storage

We all know that winters in Australia don't get too harsh, but when the weather gets colder you may not want to be out on the boat. Before you put your boat away for a few months, take note of anything that's broken. Handle all minor and major repairs before you put your boat in storage. Some repairs, even small ones, can get worse if they're unaddressed for a long period of time.

Keep it clean

Would you put away Tupperware before scrubbing it clean? Would you put a BMW in a garage when it was covered in mud and dirt? If you wouldn't do either of those things, why would you put a boat in storage when it was covered in barnacles and seaweed? Like with repairs, grime and pests that are left on boats can ruin the finish and cause other problems. After you finish cleaning, make sure that your boat is dry. A wet boat that's kept in storage can be a breeding ground for mold and bacteria.

Don't use a marina

If you aren't planning on using your boat for a few months, leaving it in a marina can be the worst thing you can do. Unless you plan on paying for someone to come out and clean it every few weeks, you're going to come back to a boat that needs a good scrubbing and a few repairs. Consider keeping your boat on your property. For instance, American barns are spacious, and can easily and efficiently house your boat.
